Tectonic Plates

Image
Today, year 3 used Oreo cookies as representations of the Tectonic Plates.  The Earth is made up of many tectonic plates. These plates move very slowly and sometimes they get caught and pressure builds up. Some of the plates have ocean water above them, whilst others include continents. The children identified the three main types of movement which include: Divergent, convergent and Transform. Convergent plates collide together which causes one plate to go on top of another one. This is how mountains are formed. Sometimes the molten rock rises to the surface making a line of volcanoes. Divergent plates move away from each other allowing molten rock to erupt out of the opening and when it cools down it forms new crust.  Transform plates rub against each other and this is what causes earthquakes.
