 This half term Year 3 will be looking closely at rhythms and making their own compositions with the use of fruit to help them.  Watching Handa’s Surprise we looked at the fruit and the description to clap out rhythms. We had a lot of fun and was able to begin putting some rhythms together.  We reminded ourselves about syllables, crotchets and quavers. 

There is definitely something in the air! From the start of the week several children in Year 3 have been asking if they can sing! So their wish was granted! We had a sneaky peak at some songs that they need to learn after half term! They worked hard at their breathing skills, we recognised different pitches and when the tempo of the music had changed. We also spotted some different dynamics (when the music was soft and loud, deep and quiet) as well as noticing the longer notes where we needed some big breathes!  They had a great go at learning 3 new songs and should be very proud of themselves. 

 Today we began our unit of work on Air.  We practiced making sounds with our voices that tell a story. (There is a video of one class doing this!) Then, while listening only to a piece of music the children drew pictures, patterns or wrote words down of how the music made them feel and what it made them think of. Then, we listened to it again but this time we watched the footage that went with it. It was of some hot air balloons. We then discussed if the music represented the footage - the children agreed it did at various different points - e.g. when the balloons were being filled with air and when all the balloons were up and floating and finally, in the dark the flames looked they they were dancing with the music! Finally, we had a go at writing some symbols to show what the music is doing. 

Today Year 3 had their first music lesson in KS2 and they were indeed very excited!  To help them with their understanding of musical terminology we spent the lesson exploring different words and drawing little pictures or a making of note of something to help them remember and to understand. To help we also had some little video clips that explained the terminology. We watched a performer (one of our words) play a violin in front of hundreds of people and with a big orchestra - what was memorable was the violinist was only 3 years old!  Great work Year 3, well done!
