Rainforests

Today, the children started a new topic: rainforests.

Here is their vocabulary mat the children will be using this term.

This lesson was all about understanding what a biome is. First, the children were given some pictures of different biomes and the animals that live there and the children had to come up with a definition of a biome. Some very interesting ideas to start with. However, as a class they finally decided a biome was a large area that has plants and animals living there in the correct conditions.

Next, the children were given pictures and definitions to match together.

Finally, the children discussed the difference between weather and climate. They then used their knowledge of climate to see how the world is split into different climates and how certain biomes can only be found in different climates.

To round the lesson off, they read a story about an elephant and his friends who live in the rainforest but deforestation caused their habitat to get smalller.
