What is a rainforest?

Today, the children watched a clip about the rainforest. From this they came up with a definition of a rainforest. All of the children remembered it was a biome, it had lots of rain and the climate is warm. Did you know that most rainforests only have evergreen trees and they are found near the Equator, which makes them hot and humid places to live.

Next, the children were given a map to see where we could locate both tropical rainforests and temperate rainforests. They discussed why we would find most of the rainforest near the Equator and why temperate forests are not found there.

The children then identified different rainforests and used their maps and atlases to label their map.

Finally, the children were introduced to two new lines of latitude; Topic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn. They also identified that the are between these two lines of latitude are known as the Tropics.
